Once I decided not to give the tiny print edition, which I also reviewed, to a longtime friend and history lover who is in a nursing home, I searched for a facsimile edition of the wonderful 1865 book by Richardson, and found this one. This appears to be in short supply, but I am sure more can be made easily. The adventure of Richardson, a Reporter for the New York Tribune during the Civil War reflects his personal experiences and responses to the people and events he sought out for articles. His take on the generals, foot soldiers, slaves, ex-slaves, everyday folks, and famous people of the time are insightful and illuminating. He engaged both women and men. I truly enjoyed this account, especially after Richardson had lulled me into the comfort of a travel fantasia with his description of his visit to a cavern, where the coming events seemed to be nothing like the violence and danger of war.Product details
